Torsten Persson has been awarded an Advanced Grant of up to 1.1 million EUR from the European Research Council (ERC) for his research project "Social and Political Economy: Theory and Empirical Evidence" where he, together with various co-authors, examines how individual and social forces together determine decisions of individuals or households. Four specific sub-studies analyze why people choose to tax cheat, when a couple chooses to have a child, what identity Chinese couples are choosing to give their children if the parents belong to different ethnic groups, and individuals' decisions to support political campaigns in the United States.

This is the second time Torsten Persson receive an Advanced Grant from the ERC. In 2010-2014 he received funding for the project "State Capacity, Conflict and Development" and "The Economics of Climate Change".
